THE PROBLEM: The prevalence of diabetes in adults has assumed staggering proportions, with an expected increase of around 170% in developing countries compared to only around 45% in developed countries. A modern lifestyle devoid of physical activity, irregular diet, obesity, hypertension and stress are just a few factors contributing to this alarming increase of diabetes. Today, India is being referred to as the Diabetic Capital Of the World. Most individuals suffer not only from Type 1 Diabetes mellitus (Insulin-dependent) but also from Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (Non-Insulin-dependent) and Adult Onset Diabetes and MODY (Maturity Onset Diabetes in the Young). Long standing diabetes whether under control or not leads to many complications. Painful nerves are probably one of the most common yet most debilitating complications arising from Diabetes. Uncontrolled blood sugar levels invariably lead to neuropathy but even very good control of blood sugar does not prevent neuropathy.

THE CAUSES: Diabetes is the major cause of neuropathy in the population. Non diabetic neuropathy is caused due to deficiency of neurotropic vitamins (Methyl cobalamine , Thiamine and Pyridoxine ) , pressure on nerve roots, viral and bacterial infections, toxins, certain drugs and disseminated malignancy. Impaired blood supply to the nerves in diabetics aggravates the damage. The high blood sugar level coupled with compromised blood flow leads to damage of the insulating cover (Myelin Sheath) on the nerves and the core nerve fibre (axons). Every cell in the body loses its repair and regenerative capacity in a diabetic and the nerve cell is no exception. The damage to nerves in the body is universal, affecting even the autonomic nerves. The damage is more pronounced in the long nerves that innervate the lower and upper limbs. The damage to the autonomic nerve that control the digestive system, heart, lungs and genito urinary systems lead to impaired function of all these organs.

THE SYMPTOMS: People with diabetic neuropathy may experience pain, numbness in both upper and lower limbs and sometimes a feeling of pin pricks that does not seem to go away. Reduced muscle power and difficulty in getting up can also be a common symptom. The loss of sensation can lead to foot ulcer as the nerves do not recognize injury due to heat or physical injury.

THE CURRENT MANAGEMENT: The current approach is to achieve tight control of blood sugar, neurotropic vitamins and pain killers. There is no way to regenerate the nerves in the present armamentarium of the physician. The treatments bring only marginal relief as it can’t help the nerve fibre to repair and regenerate.

BENEFIT OF ARTIFICIAL PANCREAS THERAPY (APT).When patients with neuropathy begin the APT therapy, every cell in the body including the nerves throughout the body immediately begin to repair and regenerate. APT is a US FDA approved therapy where insulin is pumped in pre designed pulses mimicking the normal pancreas function. These pulses of insulin stimulate the liver to release nearly 30 enzymes into the blood. These enzymes help every cell in the body including the nerve cells to repair and regenerate. This leads to reversal of nerve damage both the core and insulating sheath. Few sessions later the damage is reversed and healing is complete. You can enjoy a bonus of better metabolism, control of blood sugar, improved renal function and digestive system.
